Catch Of The Day

• April 14th, 2009

Yes, for those that where wondering what the hell was up with the last podcast, it was an April Fools Joke. The funny or not funny part is that Donk is real and not made up. There are plenty of kids in Northern England that do want to put a Donk on it.

For this episode, I return to the roots of my previous podcasts, emulating my favorite radio show of all times, "The Blue Room" on Radio One. This is a very eclectic mix of styles from a couple of old favorites and a host of folks that you may not have heard of yet, but you will.

To highlight a few standouts, first there is the Norwegian down tempo artist, Jap Jap. Next up is my favorite new indie band, The William Blakes, representing Denmark. Denmark is becoming the new Sweden with more and more quality music. Local LA boys, Flying Lotus and Nalepa, bring the glitch and the dub. Bristol England 's Bront Industries Kapital make some noise with a cinematic jazz freakout – but in a good way. Last but not least, Prins Thomas turns Jape's "Floating", into an amazing sunrise banger meant to be heard under the open skies in the early morning light.

My podcast can now be found at www.samplerplatters.com. Samplerplatters.com will soon be launching as a daily blog with tracks too fresh to wait for a podcast.

Cerviche (The Lost Mixes) Vol. 5

• February 22nd, 2009

Back in March of 2007 I made a podcast for people going to Coachella that year. It was full of Ed Banger, Institubes , and dirty electro that was just starting to hit then. This was and still is my most straight up dance 'cast ever. Not satisfied with the Garage Band mix I created, I decided to mix it live using a friends Sarrato. That never happened. Two years later it still the playlist on my Ipod when I want to rock it. So I decided to get out there 2 years late remixed in Garage Band, my GB skill are much better, and it's still rocking.

Track Listing: 1. The Teenagers "Homecoming" 2. New Young Pony Club "The Bomb" (Teenagers Mix) 2. Simian Mobile Disco "It's The Beat" (Dub for Annie Mac) 3. Surkin "Radio Fireworks" 4. Para One "Midnight Swim" (Surkin Drowning Mix) 5. Justice + Spank Rock "Thunderous Bumps" (back from japan edit) 6. Ascii Disko "Tonite" 7. The Presets "Hung Down" (madonna edit) 8. Riot In Belgium "The Acid Never Lies " (3pm Rough Rave mix) 9. Digitalism "Echoes" 10. DJ Mehdi "Signatune" (Spiller Remix) 11. Mylo vs Miami Sound Machine "Doctor Pressure" (Dirty Club Mix) 12. Midnight Juggernauts "Shadows" (Ajax Remix) 13. Zoot Woman - Taken It All (Le Knight Club Mix)

Gestation

• February 16th, 2009

Ahoy Mates,

Elephants carry their young for 22 months. It been almost that long since my last podcast. In that time my son Logan was born and is now a toddler. I could use the excuse for the lapse in podcasts, but DJ Bradley B has a newborn and manages to get his podcasts out just fine. So here is the first 'cast since July of 2007, back when "W" was still president and we still had an economy. This mix consists of some tracks that have found their way to me in the last couple of months that I really like. I'm a little late to the game with The Twelves but really dig their Cut Copy via Brazil vibe. There is some new Royskopp that sounds like old Royskopp, which rules. "Neon Strings" is by Dert who create an album of Hip Hop beats inspired by Bjork. The next podcast will coming very shortly and is named "Cerveche", it's dirty elctro blog house mix of what was then artists that you hadn't heard of yet. Wanted to properly mix it on decks and never got to it. So the Garage Band Edit will be up next week.

The Captain

Track Listing: 1. Mr. Suitcase "Fraud 13 & 14" 2. The Virgins "Rich Girls" (The Twelves Remix) 3. Diplo "Newsflash" featuring Sandra Melody 4. The Twelves "Be My Crush" (The Juan MacLean's Remix) 5. Junior Boys "Bits & Pieces" 6 Van She "Kelly" (M83 edit) 7 Royksopp "Happy Up Here" (Mr. Wyse nice edit) 8. Sebastien Tellier "Divine" (Midnight Juggernauts Mix} 9. Boom Bit "The Move" 10. Dert "Neon Strings" 11. Friendly Fires "Jump in th Pool" 12. Heartsrevolution "Digital Suicide Lullaby"

Guitar Fish (Better Late Than Never)

• July 8th, 2007

This podcast was supposed to have been posted at the beginning of May. As you can tell, it's late. Coachella has come and gone, been to way too many shows, and most importantly started a family. So my apologies for the tardiness, pregnant wife trumps podcast every time.

As the name implies, this podcast is all Guitar Bands. Since this is so late, you may have heard some of these tracks by now so I won't go into detail about the artist and tracks. I still think it holds up even two months late. Saw two of the artists, Decemberists and Andrew Bird, at the Bowl last night. Andrew Bird was great live, and the Decemberists with the full LA Philharmonic was magical. This is the third time that I have seen the Phil play with a band, and they finally got it right.

With out further ado I present Guitar Fish:

1. "Lovely Allen" Holy Fuck 2. "Roscoe" (Beyond the Wizard Sleeve Remix) Midlake 3. "Mistaken for Strangers" The National 4. "Think About Me" Decemberists 5. "Sleep Tonight" Stars (Re-imagined by Junior Boys) 6. "Spring And By Summer Fall" Blonde Redhead 7. "Kid Gloves" Voxtrot 8. "Rough Gem" Islands 9. "Same Old Drag" The Apples In Stereo 10. Fiery Crash" Andrew Bird 11. "Candylion" Gruff Rhys 12. "Sit Tight" Field Music 13. "Knife" Grizzly Bear

I will be back next week with the dirty Electro mix, "Cerviche" So be prepared to shake your ass.

On The Half Shell

• April 6th, 2007

Back to serve up another dish of the freshest selections. The first track is "Hot Day" by Lemongrass. It really reminds me of Bent before they went all House on their Intercept release.

Next is "Music" from Japanese leftfield master Cornelius.

Continuing in my favorite genre of the moment, electro-folk, is The Year Of "Ronnie Hawkins" off their release Slow Days.

This, as with a lot of my tracks, is import only, Amazon is your best bet to find them.

Next is the "It" producer of the moment, Mark Ronson, having just produced both the Lilly Allen and Amy Winehouse records, with a complete reworking of Smith's classic "Stop Me...."

After remixing about everyone, 4Hero is back with his own artist album with this beautiful ode to sunrise "Morning Child".

From last years Ladytron album, the track "Destroy Everything You Touch" is back with an amazing (Vector Lovers Edit).

The first of this volumes Dub fix comes from a very unlikely source, Luke Vibert, aka Wagon Christ with "Combination Reggae Dancing". I like this track for it's James Brown sample and bass line, but even more because it's Wagon Christ doing a reggae track.

So I have confession to make, I love the Dub Pistols and love Dub Pistols more with Terry Hall of Fun Boy Three singing, so sue me for adding another track "Running From Thoughts" to this mix.

From what is one of the criminally underrated albums of last year, Cut Copy gives us "Future". Buy this album now.

I finish this volume out with three tracks from the "New Rave" movement. I hate the sub-genre music naming bullshit but do like these tracks. First is UK producer Justice battles Simian with "Never Be Alone".

Simian lost a couple of members and gained a much cooler name, Simian Mobile Disco who gives us "It's the Beat".

They are noisy, they are young, they sample the sounds of my misspent youth - they are the Klaxons with "It's Not Over Yet".

Actually is over, but check back in couple of weeks for Guitar Fish, your next course from the Captains Sample platter.

And finally the track listing form Captain's Sampler Platter Vol. 1 "Daylight Saving Time".

1. The Collectors Black Sand 2. Ratatat Wildcat 3. Dub Pistols Rapture 4. Just Jack Starz in Their Eyes 5. All Smiles The Velvetest Ballon 6. The Shins Sea Legs 7. Ms. John Soda A million Times 8. SIa Pictures 9.K-Os Sunday Morning 10. RJD2 You Never Had It 11. Aim Flight 602 12. Sebastien Tellier La Ritournelle
